What is AI?

A simple explanation of artificial intelligence, with no jargon.

AI stands for "artificial intelligence." It means computer programs that can do things we used to think only people could do, like understanding questions, writing sentences, or recognizing faces in photos.

Modern AI learned by reading and looking at huge amounts of text and pictures. It does not think or feel like a person. It is very good at guessing what words or answers usually come next.

You probably already use AI: when your phone suggests the next word, when your email filters out junk mail, or when you ask a smart speaker about the weather.

AI can make mistakes and sometimes states wrong facts confidently. Treat it like a helpful but imperfect assistant, and double-check anything important such as health, money, or legal matters.
