How to use ChatGPT for the first time, step by step
A gentle, step-by-step guide to asking ChatGPT your first question, and keeping your information private.
ChatGPT is a free AI helper made by a company called OpenAI. You type (or say) a question, and it writes back an answer in plain sentences.
It has a free version. Paid plans add more features, but you do not need one to start.
ChatGPT can be wrong, and it can sound very sure when it is wrong. Use it for ideas and explanations, and check anything about health, money, or the law with a real person you trust.
What to do
- On a computer: open your web browser and go to chatgpt.com. Make sure the address is spelled exactly like that. On a phone: get the official "ChatGPT" app by OpenAI from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Check that the maker is listed as OpenAI.
- Decide whether to make an account. OpenAI lets people try ChatGPT without signing up. A free account lets you save your past chats and use extra features, like talking out loud.
- Find the message box at the bottom of the screen. Type a question just as you would ask a friend. For example: "Explain what a Roth IRA is in simple words."
- Press Enter, or tap the arrow button, and wait a few seconds for the answer.
- Ask follow-up questions. Try "Can you make that shorter?" or "Please explain more simply." There are no silly questions.
- Protect your privacy. Never type your Social Security number, bank or card numbers, or passwords. If you would rather your chats not be used to train OpenAI's AI, open Settings, choose Data controls, and turn off "Improve the model for everyone."
