How to find your ancestors free with AI

Use a free AI helper to organize what you know about your family, then search free records like FamilySearch and the U.S. Census.

🌳 Start your free AI Family Tree

Copy our free prompt and let an AI helper build your family tree with you, one question at a time.

Build my family tree

AI cannot look up your ancestors by magic. What it can do is help you organize what you already know, explain old records in plain words, and suggest where to look next.

Start with yourself and work backward, one generation at a time. Write down names, years and towns you are sure of. Mark anything you are unsure of with a question mark.

Then search free record websites. FamilySearch.org is free with a free account. The National Archives explains how to find U.S. Census records. Find a Grave has many free cemetery records, and the Library of Congress has free old newspapers on Chronicling America.

When you find a record you do not understand, like an old census page, you can type what it says into an AI helper and ask it to explain it simply. Always check facts against the real record. AI can make mistakes.

What to do

  1. Build your starting tree with our free AI Family Tree prompt.
  2. Ask the AI: "Which free records could help me find the missing people?"
  3. Search FamilySearch, census records and old newspapers for one person at a time.
  4. Bring what you find back to the AI and ask it to update your table.

Copy this prompt to plan your search

I am researching my family history. Here is what I know so far:
[paste names, years and places]

Please:
1. Put this into a simple table (name, relation, born, place, notes).
2. List what is missing.
3. Suggest free records I could search for each missing person, such as FamilySearch, U.S. Census records, and old newspapers.
Do not guess or invent any names or dates. Use plain, simple words.

Next step: build your AI family tree.

Questions people ask

Can AI find my ancestors for me?

Not by itself. A chat AI does not search private genealogy databases. It helps you organize facts, understand records and plan where to look.

Is FamilySearch really free?

Yes. FamilySearch is free to use. You need to create a free account to see many records.

Can I trust what the AI tells me about my family?

Treat it as a helper, not a source. Only trust names and dates you can match to a real record.
