ChatGPT for seniors: a free mini course

Five short lessons. About an hour in total. Free, no sign-up, large print.

ChatGPT is a free AI helper. You type or say a question, and it writes back in plain sentences. This course walks you through it slowly, one small step at a time, with a practice prompt you can copy for every lesson.

Lesson 1 of 5 · 10 minutes

Open ChatGPT safely

Goal: Find the real ChatGPT and ask your very first question.

  • On a computer, type chatgpt.com into the address bar. Check the spelling carefully. Look-alike websites exist.
  • On a phone, get the app called "ChatGPT" from the Apple App Store or Google Play. Make sure the maker is listed as OpenAI.
  • ChatGPT has a free version. You don’t need to pay or enter a card to start. OpenAI also lets you try it without making an account.
  • Type in the box at the bottom of the screen, then press Enter or tap the arrow.

Practice prompt for lesson 1

Hello! I am new to ChatGPT. Please explain in 3 short, simple sentences what you can help me with.

Try it: Copy this prompt, paste it into ChatGPT, and read the answer. That’s it. You’ve finished lesson 1.

Lesson 2 of 5 · 10 minutes

Ask good questions

Goal: Get clearer, more useful answers by telling ChatGPT a little about what you want.

  • Say who you are and what you need. "I’m 72 and new to smartphones" gets a better answer than "phone help."
  • Ask for the style you like: "in simple words," "in 5 short steps," or "in large, short paragraphs."
  • If an answer is too long or confusing, just say so: "Please make that shorter" or "Explain it like I’m new to this."
  • You can keep asking follow-up questions in the same chat. ChatGPT remembers what you said earlier in that conversation.

Practice prompt for lesson 2

I am a retired person who is new to technology. Please explain what "the cloud" means, in simple words, in 5 short sentences. Then ask me if I have any questions.

Try it: After the answer, type a follow-up such as "Can you give me an everyday example?"

Lesson 3 of 5 · 15 minutes

Everyday things ChatGPT can help with

Goal: Try ChatGPT on real, useful tasks from daily life.

  • Write a note: a thank-you card, a birthday message, or a polite letter to a landlord.
  • Cook: ask for an easy recipe using what’s already in your fridge.
  • Learn: ask it to explain a word, a news topic, or how something works.
  • Plan: make a packing list, a simple weekly schedule, or questions to bring to a doctor’s visit.
  • Have fun: trivia, word games, or memories. Try our free AI projects for more ideas.

Practice prompt for lesson 3

I have eggs, spinach, cheese, and bread. Please give me one easy recipe for one person, with large simple steps and no special equipment.

Try it: Swap in what’s really in your kitchen. Then try writing a short thank-you note to a grandchild.

Lesson 4 of 5 · 10 minutes

Check the answers

Goal: Know when to trust ChatGPT and when to double-check.

  • ChatGPT can be wrong, and it can sound very sure when it’s wrong. OpenAI says so on the screen.
  • Use it for ideas and explanations. Check anything about health, medicines, money, or the law with a real person you trust, like your doctor, pharmacist, or bank.
  • Ask it where information comes from, then look up that source yourself.
  • If something sounds surprising or urgent, slow down and check before acting.

Practice prompt for lesson 4

What is a Medicare Advantage plan? Explain it in simple words. Then tell me which official website or phone number I should use to check this information myself.

Try it: Notice how ChatGPT points you to an official source. Make a habit of checking important answers there.

Lesson 5 of 5 · 10 minutes

Protect your privacy and avoid scams

Goal: Use ChatGPT without giving away private information.

  • Never type your Social Security number, Medicare number, bank or card numbers, or passwords into ChatGPT.
  • Leave out full names, addresses, and account details when you ask for help with a letter or bill. Use "my bank" or "[address]" instead.
  • You can turn off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, then Data controls, if you don’t want your chats used to train OpenAI’s AI.
  • ChatGPT will not call, text, or email you asking for money. Anyone who does is a scammer using its name.
  • Got a suspicious text or email? Paste it into our free Scam Text and Email Checker. It works right on our site.

Practice prompt for lesson 5

I got a text saying my package is delayed and I need to pay a $1.99 fee by clicking a link. Do not ask for any personal details. Explain the warning signs that this might be a scam, in simple words.

Try it: You’ve finished the course! Print the cheat sheet below and keep it next to your computer.
